A Surprise Proposal at Konzelmann Estate Winery

Konzelmann Estate Winery has always been on my list of dream locations to photograph. The view of the lake, the rows of vines, that beautiful white gazebo, it’s romantic without trying too hard. So when Ian messaged me about planning a proposal there, I already knew this was going to be something special.

He told me his girlfriend, Maddy, loves the beach, the sea, the lake — anywhere with water. He wanted to give her something memorable and personal, so he booked the winery for a day and asked me to be there to capture it. The twist? It had to stay a secret.

On the day of the proposal, I had to blend in. We decided I’d pose as “the photographer that comes with the winery package” just casually taking a few shots as part of their visit. That meant no obvious hints, no staging that would give it away.

Outside, I was cool and professional. Inside, I was counting every heartbeat, waiting for the moment. I moved them around naturally, using the gazebo and lake as beautiful backdrops, making sure I was ready without making them suspicious.

And then it happened — Ian dropped to one knee. The surprise on her face, the way she instantly lit up, the laughter and tears all at once… these are the moments that happen in seconds but stay with you for a lifetime.

After she said yes, the whole mood shifted. The nerves were gone, replaced with pure joy. We walked through the vineyards, popped champagne, and soaked up the late-afternoon light. It was relaxed, fun, and full of energy — exactly what you want from a proposal session.

Why a Proposal Photographer is Worth It

Planning a proposal can be nerve-wracking. You’re juggling logistics, trying to keep it a secret, and making sure it’s perfect for your partner, all while hiding your own excitement (and nerves).

Having a photographer in on the plan means:

  • We help with location & timing. I’ll find the best light, angles, and spots so you can focus on the moment, not the details.

  • We keep it natural. I know how to blend in, keep the surprise, and make you both feel comfortable even if you’re not “camera people.”

  • You’ll remember it forever. Proposals happen fast, photos let you relive the look, the “yes,” and every hug and laugh after.

Making it Easy

The secret to pulling off a smooth proposal photoshoot is communication. When you book with me, we’ll go over:

  • How to disguise the shoot so your partner doesn’t suspect anything

  • The best way to position yourselves for great photos without it feeling staged

  • How to plan the “signal” moment so I’m ready without being obvious

  • Optional ideas for celebrating right after (champagne, a walk, a hidden picnic, etc.)

It’s not about turning you into actors, it’s about creating a space where you can be yourselves while I quietly document one of the biggest moments of your life.

If you’re planning to propose, whether it’s at a winery, on a cliff, or in your living room, let’s make sure you have photos you’ll treasure forever.
