Spring Couple Sessions in Niagara & Toronto: How I Shoot, What to Expect, and Why These Photos Actually Matter

Spring sessions are always popular, but I don’t like treating them like a trend or a seasonal package.

For me, these sessions are more about capturing a moment in someone’s life that they’ll come back to later. Sometimes it’s an engagement, sometimes it’s just a couple wanting photos together, sometimes it turns into something bigger later on.

A lot of the couples I photograph don’t just disappear after one shoot. I end up seeing them again for proposals, weddings, maternity, newborn sessions, first birthdays. It becomes a timeline, not just a one-time booking.

And I think that’s why I care about these sessions so much. It’s not just about taking pretty photos. It’s about documenting something real while it’s happening.

How I actually work with couples (and why it feels easy)

Most people come in thinking they’re awkward in front of the camera. Almost everyone says that.

The way I shoot is not about putting you in perfect poses and leaving you there. I guide you, but I let things happen in between. Walking, talking, laughing, fixing your hair, spinning around, sitting down when you feel like it. Those are the moments that actually look like you.

I also don’t rush people through sessions like a checklist. Even in shorter sessions, I try to create a space where you feel comfortable enough to just exist a little.

Kate will also be part of some of these sessions, and she brings something really important into the experience. She helps people feel seen and relaxed in a way that goes beyond just “stand here and smile.” That energy changes everything.

The locations I’m planning for this season

Niagara Botanical Gardens will be one of the main locations, especially early in spring. It’s open, calm, and has enough variety to create different looks without moving too much.

For Toronto, I’ve been looking into cherry blossom spots and soft spring locations where we can get that same feeling without it being too crowded or chaotic.

Some of the spots I’m considering are High Park for cherry blossoms, Trinity Bellwoods for a more casual city feel, and areas around Edwards Gardens or the Toronto Botanical Garden for something more structured but still natural.

If you already have a place in mind, I’m always open to that. Sometimes the best sessions happen in places that mean something to you, not just the “popular” spots.

What your session can look like in real life

One of the couples I photographed brought a simple picnic setup. A basket, a blanket, a few small details. That’s it.

It didn’t feel styled in a heavy way. It just gave them something to do together. They laid down, talked, laughed, held hands, and everything felt natural.

You can do something like that, or you can keep it even simpler. You don’t need props, you don’t need a full plan. Sometimes just showing up and being present with each other is more than enough.

I’ll guide you either way, depending on what you need.

A small film idea I’m really excited about

I recently received a CampSnap digital Super 8 camera, and I will be testing it out during sessions.

It will create these soft, slightly imperfect, nostalgic clips that feel very different from regular video. It’s not overly polished, and that’s exactly why I like it.

I’m planning to give away three one-minute Super 8-style films to couples who book spring sessions. It’s something small, but it adds a completely different layer to your memories.

I’ll be sharing more of how I actually use it during real shoots, not just the idea of it, so you can see how it fits into a workflow like mine.

Booking details for spring sessions

Spring sessions will run from mid-April to late May, depending on weather and bloom timing.

They’ll be 30 minutes, $150 plus tax, and include 15 edited photos delivered the next day.

These sessions are open to any couple, not just engagements. If you want photos together, that’s enough of a reason.

You don’t need a special occasion to document something meaningful.

Why this work means so much to me

I think the reason I love this type of photography so much is because I get to see people over time.

It starts with something simple, like a session in the spring. Then a proposal, then a wedding, then a baby.

And I’m there for all of it, not in a big dramatic way, but quietly, through photos.

It feels like I’m witnessing something real and giving people something they can hold onto later. Proof that these moments existed, exactly how they felt.

And that part never gets old.
