A Romantic Engagement Session at Battlefield Park, Hamilton
There’s something about Battlefield Park National Historic Site that doesn’t just feel like a location—it feels like a story waiting to be told.
When we were planning this engagement session, the couple actually suggested this spot—and it made perfect sense. It was not only beautiful, but also close to the coffee shop where they had their first date, which we already knew we wanted to include. And honestly, the second I saw it through their perspective, I understood why.
It had everything I love working with: textured architecture, soft greenery, quiet corners, and just enough history to give the images depth without trying too hard. But what made this shoot special wasn’t just the location—it was them.
This is a couple who have been together for years. The kind of love that doesn’t need to perform. It just exists, comfortably, honestly—and that’s exactly what I wanted to capture.
A Location That Feels Like a Film Set
Battlefield Park is known for its connection to the Battle of Stoney Creek. There’s this beautiful contrast everywhere you look—historic stone structures that feel almost castle-like, quiet museum buildings with soft white siding, and open green spaces that glow at golden hour. It’s not one aesthetic. It’s multiple worlds in one place.
We moved through the location like we were building scenes instead of just taking photos. The stone walls gave us something dramatic and grounded. The house added softness and nostalgia. And then the gardens opened everything up into light, movement, and play.
It felt less like a shoot and more like directing a slow, romantic film.
Mixing Digital, Nostalgia, and Motion
I wanted this session to feel layered—not just visually, but emotionally.
So I brought in my Camp Snap Camera as a prop and also shot Super 8 video alongside the digital images.
There’s something about mixing formats that adds depth. The clean, editorial digital shots give you clarity and structure. The Camp Snap adds this playful, imperfect nostalgia.
It’s grainy, soft, almost dreamlike.
Like something you’d find years later and feel everything all over again. I’ll be including the Super 8 footage here—because you need to feel it, not just see it!

Letting the Story Unfold Naturally
I don’t like overly posed engagement sessions. I’ll guide, of course—but I’m always watching for the in-between moments.
Those are the moments that matter.
With them, it was easy. They’re naturally affectionate to one another. So instead of forcing anything, I leaned into movement—walking, spinning, holding hands, pulling each other closer. It created this rhythm throughout the shoot that made everything feel alive.
You can literally feel their history together in these images.
Recreating Their First Date
This part… I loved.
They told me about their first date, and it happened at Coffee Culture Café & Eatery. So of course, we had to include it.
We went there and recreated that feeling—not in a staged, cheesy way, but in a cinematic, almost memory-like way. Sitting across from each other, holding coffee cups, smiling in that quiet, familiar way couples do when they already know each other deeply.
I shot through reflections, glass, shadows—so it feels like you’re looking into a moment rather than just at it.
It turned into one of my favorite parts of the entire session because it added meaning. Not just “they’re in love,” but this is where it started.
Golden Hour, Movement, and Real Emotion
We ended the session in the open greenery, right as the sun started dropping.
This is where everything loosened up even more—running, spinning, laughing, holding each other like no one else was around. The light wrapped around them in the softest way, and I barely had to say anything.
Those are always my favorite moments as a photographer. When I can step back and just observe.
Because that’s when it’s real.
Why This Session Matters to Me
This shoot wasn’t about creating “pretty engagement photos.” It was about telling a story that actually belongs to them.
Where they’ve been.
How they love.
What their life together feels like right now—just before everything shifts into wedding season.
And the fact that I get to photograph their wedding this June makes it even more meaningful. There’s already a connection, already a visual language we’ve built together.
This wasn’t just the beginning of their gallery—it’s part of their timeline.
Final Thoughts
Battlefield Park surprised me in the best way. It’s one of those locations that gives you so much to work with if you’re willing to explore it beyond the obvious.
And paired with a couple like this? It becomes something else entirely.
Something soft, cinematic, and honest.
If You’re Dreaming of Photos Like This…
If you’re someone who wants more than just posed photos—if you want your story told in a way that actually feels like you—I would love to create something like this together.
Whether it’s an engagement, a love story, or something completely your own.
