Why Branding Photos Matter for Your Business
Showing the face behind the work
A little while ago I reached out to Masha, a Toronto-based makeup artist, and asked if she needed new photos for her brand. She said yes, so we planned a simple shoot focused on her work and personality.
We kept everything clean and minimal. Makeup brushes, lip gloss, her Dior palette, a makeup chair, a stool, and just her doing what she does. At one point she also wanted to wear her glasses, which honestly worked perfectly and added another side to her look.
The goal wasn’t just to take pretty photos. It was to create images that actually reflect who she is as a business owner.
Branding Photos Should Feel Like You
When someone visits your website or Instagram, the first thing they notice is usually your photos. Before they read anything, they see your face, your work, and your energy.
Branding photos help people understand what you do without needing a long explanation.
For someone like Masha, it makes sense to show the tools of her work. Brushes, makeup palettes, applying products, sitting in the makeup chair. Those little details tell the story of her profession immediately.
Why Updating Your Photos Matters
Your business grows and changes over time, and your photos should reflect that. A lot of people keep the same headshot for years, but when you run a personal brand, updating your photos regularly really helps.
Fresh photos keep your website, social media, and marketing materials feeling current.
More importantly, they show the real person behind the brand.
How I Approach Branding Sessions
When I plan a branding shoot, I don’t just think about how the photos will look, I think about how they will be used.
Where are these images going to live?
Website, Instagram, booking platforms, LinkedIn, press features?
That changes everything.
With Masha, I knew she needed a mix of clean portraits and natural working shots she could use across different platforms. Something professional enough for her website, but still relaxed and real for social media.
I shoot with that in mind. I guide, but I don’t overpose. I want people to look like themselves, just a more confident, clear version of it.
Creating a Studio Experience (Even in a Condo)
I don’t have a traditional studio space, I live in a condo in Toronto, but I set up a clean studio environment whenever I have clients.
Simple backdrop, controlled lighting, everything minimal so the focus stays on the person and their work.
For branding sessions especially, this works really well. It keeps the photos timeless and flexible. You’re not tied to a specific trend or location, so the images can be used for a long time without feeling outdated.
At the same time, we still bring in elements of your work. In this case, makeup tools, textures, movement, small actions that make the photos feel alive instead of staged.
It’s Not Just Photos, It’s Content for Your Brand
One thing I always tell people is that you’re not just getting photos from a branding session, you’re building a content library.
Instead of struggling with what to post, you already have images ready for:
• your website updates
• Instagram posts and reels
• client inquiries and booking pages
• collaborations and brand deals
It makes showing up online so much easier.
And when your visuals are consistent, people start recognizing your brand without even thinking about it.
Thinking About Updating Your Photos?
If you feel like your current photos don’t really represent where you are right now, it might be time to update them.
Whether you’re a makeup artist, creative, or business owner, having photos that reflect your work and your personality makes a difference in how people see and trust your brand.
